The Metro Manila Health Research and Development Consortium (MMHRDC) invites us (CLHRDC) to send participants to the Training-Workshop on Animal Care and Use in Research and Animal Biosafety. This will be held at the UP Manila National Institutes of Health Centennial Conference Room on January 26-27, 2012. This training-workshop is a capacity building initiative of MMHRDC intended for investigators and research advisers involved in researches involving the use of animals. A certificate of training, will be provided to the participants after the completion of the course. .
The objectives of the course are as follows:
a. To promote awareness on the regulations and policies on animal care and use in research;
b. To promote a culture of biosafety in the animal laboratory
c. To capacitate participants with working knowledge and techniques in animal care and use as well as biosafety in the animal laboratory
Among topics for this course include:
* Republic Act 8485: Animal Welfare Act and other regulations
* Role of institutions, investigators and the IACUC
* Housing and animal care requirements
* Techniques and procedures in blood collection, drug administration and euthanasia
* Principles of Biosafety, Animal Biosafety Levels, Practices, Primary and Secondary Containment
To optimize participant learning during the workshops, they are limiting the number of participants. The Central Luzon Health Research and Development Consortium (CLHRDC) is an association of different government line agencies, hospitals and higher educational institutions in Central Luzon that aims at strengthening the collaborative efforts among these institutions, both private and public, in improving the health conditions of the people through enhanced undertaking of health research and management activities.
The CLHRDC is committed to undertake among others, the identification of priority regional health concerns as set forth by the National Unified Health Research Agenda (NHURA) as well as generate resources for health-related researches. It further aims to develop human resources, facilities and other infrastructure requirements for health and nutrition research activities.
As the lead convenor for the CLHRDC, the DOST III calls for regular meetings to provide directions for the consortium and ensure the accomplishments of activities.
The identified CLHRDC priority areas which are aligned with the DOST-PCHRD and DOH priorities are as follows: (1) point of care (POC) technologies for infectious/tropical and lifestyle related diseases, (2) drug discovery and development, (3) telemedicine and medical informatics, development of devices for remote diagnosis and monitoring, (4) health service delivery and (5) genomic/molecular technology.
At present, the consortium works on a research entitled “Detection, Treatment and Prevention/Control of Tuberculosis in Region III: An Assessment” with La Consolacion University Philppines as the project head.
To date, the consortium has seventeen (17) member-institutions which include: Department of Science and Technology III (DOST III), Department of Health, Commission on Higher Education III, Commission on Population, Jose B. Lingad Memorial General Hospital, Paulino J. Garcia Memorial Research Medical Center, Angeles University Foundation, Bataan Peninsula State University, Bulacan State University, Holy Angel University, La Consolacion University Philippines (formerly University of Regina Carmeli), Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Ramon Magsaysay Technological State University, Republic Central Colleges, Systems Plus College Foundation, Tarlac State University and University of the Assumption .
Membership in the consortium is open to interested parties who are required to submit a letter of intent, an endorsement from a founding member-institution of CLHRDC and a survey questionnaire which can be downloaded from the CLHRDC website: http://region3.healthresearch.ph. Benefits of membership in the consortium include: strengthening of research capabilities through complementation and sharing of resources; access to various human resources and institution development programs/projects of the consortium; and sharing of scientific information through library linkage and similar arrangements.

CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: PCHRD'S OUTSTANDING HEALTH RESEARCH AWARD 2012
PURPOSE
The Outstanding Health Research Award (OHRA) encourages researchers to be sensitive to the scientific and technological requirements of the health delivery system and rewards those whose research efforts are relevant to prevalent health problems.
The award gives recognition to the work of an individual or study group who has been able to demonstrate the link between research and practice through the absorption or utilization of his/her research project in the health delivery system.
NOMINATION PROCEDURES:
1. Who can be nominated
All Filipino health researchers, working individually or in groups, can be considered as candidates for the award. Work in either biomedical research or health services research may be considered.
2. Who can nominate
Nominations may be made by individuals, scientific, technological and professional societies or associations, research institutes and universities and colleges. However, self nomination is not allowed.
3. How to nominate
Nominations should be made on the prescribed nomination form. Each nomination should include all of the following:
a. one copy of each of the technical reports/and publications of the completed projects leading to the technology.
b. write-up on the impact of the project on health delivery highlighting how the results were utilized and the benefits derived from their utilization.
c. A statement from the technology user(s) describing the contribution of the technology in improving health delivery.
4. Where to send nominations

SELECTION:
A. Criteria for Selection
1. Extent of Impact on health/ quality of life (30%)
Contributes to the promotion of the well-being of a greater section of the population
Provides long-term solution to health problems affecting majority of the population
Short gestation period for timely application of results
2. Economic benefits (30%)
Results to savings accruing from import substitution and reduced health care cost
Have the potential for export
Increases productivity
Better allocation/application of health resources is achieved
3. S & T benefits (40%)
Improves knowledge and/or resolves issues in health problems
Serves as stepping stone for other areas of investigation
B. Procedure for Selection
1. Nominations for the Award will be considered by a Screening Committee
composed of distinguished scientists and health practitioners appointed by the PCHRD Governing Council;
2. The Screening Committee can undertake visits or interview nominees or other
concerned individual to validate statements made in the nomination form.
3. The decision of the Screening Committee will be final.
INCENTIVES:
The award will consist of a cash prize of P500, 000.00 and a trophy for each of the biomedical research category and health services research category.
